GRANTS
The Trust makes discretionary grants, in accordance with its grants policies applying from time to time, primarily to sailors who achieved medal winning performances in world championships in the major international centreboard classes, in the Olympic Games, and in significant offshore keelboat events (other than fully professional events)
The Trust has for many years, provided significant contributions towards the expenses of the nationally selected teams competing in the ISAF Youth world championships and the Optimist world championships and it is now the naming rights sponsor of these two teams. It was also an annual contributor to the former Yachting New Zealand Academy and has made grants to New Zealand teams competing in the vision impaired world sailing championships.
As there is now very little participation by New Zealand yachts in major, non-professional, international keelboat competition, the Trust has in recent years made grants towards the administration expenses of offshore races from New Zealand to Fiji and Noumea, as well as the shorthanded races around New Zealand and around the North Island, and the Bay of Islands Sailing Week. However, that is not its preferred option. The Trust also subsidised the cost of yacht owners obtaining initial IRC certification, in the hope that adoption of that system as the primary New Zealand handicapping system for competitive keelboat racing would help to encourage the return of amateur New Zealand keelboat sailors to the world stage.
The Trust at present is reviewing its objectives in the light of the substantial changes which have taken place in yachting, both internationally and domestically since the Trust was founded and expects to revise its grants policies early in 2012.
